The London International Guitar Festival is back!
London International Guitar Festival 07 has a packed agenda this coming October − events at the Bolivar Hall include tribute concerts to Antonio Lauro on the 90th anniversary year of his birth (Wednesday 10th); and Andrès Segovia on the 20th anniversary year of his death (Wednesday 24th); and a memorial concert for Christine Li (Wednesday 17th); there are daytime and early evening concerts at the Royal College of Music on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th; and a concert at Highgate´s atmospheric Lauderdale House on Sunday 21st.
Music to be performed includes pieces by Lauro, Barrios, Sojo and Pujol, Ponce´s Suite Antigua, Castelnuovo-Tedesco´s Tonadilla on the name of Andrès Segovia, and Segovia´s own guitar duet Divertimento. Graham Wade´s vignettes on aspects of Segovia will provide a fascinating historical context.
Christine Li, who died of cancer earlier this year, was a shining figure in the world of the dedicated amateur guitarist. Her memorial concert at the Bolivar Hall, for which profits will go to cancer charities, will be given by Carlos Bonell, Amanda Cook, Forbes Henderson, Jorgen Skogmo, and the Friends House Guitar Ensemble of which Christine was a member for many years.
The Royal College of Music presents guit@rcm, a two day celebration of music for guitar, during which there will be works commissioned by Julian Bream, and composed by RCM students past and present, as well as works by Brouwer, Britten, Dodgson and Piazzolla. Juan Grecos will give a talk about strings and care of the nails.
There will be a workshop for dedicated amateur guitarists in central London, on Sunday 14 October. Guitarists are invited to apply for special one-to-one masterclasses with Royal College of Music professors. Admission to events at the RCM is free.
