Recorded at the beautiful St. Andrew’s Church in the village of Lammas, Norfolk, England in 2018 on one of the last guitars made by Arcadio Marín before his untimely death at the age of 54 in 2021. The prelude is the first of 48 Preludes and Fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier conposed in all the keys. This was an accomplishment in itself due to new ideas of how to tune musical instruments so they would sound well throughout the range. The new ideas were a long time in gestation and subject to much conflict. Pythagoras established the science of pitch but knew it was flawed from a practical point of view. It took more than a thousand years to devise the system of tuning that Bach championed, in use to this day. Along the way Pope Gregory 111 and Galileo’s dad got involved but it was Bach who nailed it. My answer to the question in the title: it’s way up there, certainly in the top ten.
